Jeremiah is an intellectual property and technology lawyer, licensed in Ontario, Canada.
He serves as Counsel for the Copyright Board of Canada, where he advises on the pricing of copyright-protected works as well as on matters relating to information governance and privacy. Jeremiah’s expertise spans key industries crucial to Canada’s cultural economy, including digital, television, radio, sports, concerts, fitness, and gaming.
In addition to regularly providing legal advice on related topics, Jeremiah has nearly fifteen years of experience working with data. He has extensive experience in data governance and policy and is a published author and active contributor to the open data community. Jeremiah has worked in privacy, data protection, and compliance, serving as a Privacy Officer for eight years. His technical and academic experience includes roles as a research fellow and database specialist, publishing data-driven research, teaching university-level statistics, and defending an experiment-based quantitative master’s thesis. Most recently, Jeremiah has been focused on the exciting developments and debates surrounding machine learning and AI.
Jeremiah’s passion for computing and innovation has been evident from an early age, even before he obtained his amateur radio license at 10 years old. This enthusiasm has resulted in deep technical knowledge and has inspired much of his professional and academic work. Jeremiah codes in Javascript, Python, R and Power Automate and enjoys using these tools to build solutions to legal and organizational problems in his workplace and at home.
Jeremiah has a broad background in business. As a law student, he conducted field research on the use of intellectual property in Kenya’s additive manufacturing sector. He has served as President of a labor union, VP and director for an organization with annual revenues of $5 million, and co-founded startups in social media, education, and entertainment.
A proud graduate of the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law, Jeremiah worked closely with Professor Jeremy de Beer, a globally recognized researcher in intellectual property, futures thinking, and open collaborative innovation. One of his proudest moments was in 2017 when he led the team that won the Fox Cup for best team and the Gordon F. Henderson Award for best factum at the Harold G. Fox Intellectual Property Moot. He now helps coach uOttawa law students, who themselves have seen success at national and international competitions.
